You are trying to be fair, I agree with you that the regular season champ means the team is stronger. But, remember follow the money when discussing the NCAA. The reason the conferences use the conference tourney champ is to get fans to attend, pay a lot for tickets, and they make more money. If the tourney was held and the winner did not get the auto bid, less would attend so the conferences would make less TV and gate moneys. Decisions are not made to only find the best teams, money.
